Obituary

On Sunday, May 5, 2019, we lost a caring and devoted husband, father and friend. Donald L. Campbell passed away at home, surrounded by family.

Don was born Sept. 9, 1932, in Townsend, Mont. The second son of Rose and Jess Campbell, he had an older brother, Merle, and later, a baby sister, Millie.

He attended rural schools out of Townsend, riding his horse to class. When his parents bought a remote ranch at White Gulch, he boarded in Helena with grandparents. When he could drive, he finished at Broadwater High in Townsend.

In 1951, Don joined the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Japan for one year and then spent nine months on the USS Philippine Sea aircraft carrier in response to the Korean conflict. When he returned, he married Verlee “Vee” Chenkovich. They knew one another for 70 years and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in September.

They spent a year in Treasure Island in San Francisco, two years in Kodiak, Alaska, and a stint in Stockton, Calif., where Don finished his service.

After logging in Montana for a year, Don, Vee and baby Lorri headed to Moses Lake, Wash., to begin his career as an electrician. They soon moved to Pasco with the addition of baby Renee.

As a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 112, Don worked at Hanford. In 1971, the family moved to Clarkston, where Don worked on the region’s dams. In 1980, Don and Vee moved back to the Tri-Cities to finish out his career.

In 1994, Don retired to Clarkston, finding joy on the greens of Quail Ridge Golf Course. Don and Vee traveled to Priest Lake, the Oregon coast, Montana, Hawaii and Mexico. They also enjoyed their adventures with the Good Sam Club.

Don was preceded in death by parents Jess and Rose Campbell; brother Merle; sister Millie; and granddaughter Shantel. His good heart lives on in his wife, Vee; daughters Lorri (Mark) Huffman and Renee (Greg) Kammers; grandchildren Amanda (Greg) Entel, Bryce (Julie) Kammers and Katlin (Brian) Grimm; great-granddaughters Lily, Raegan, Evelyn and Elliott; and brother-in-law Gary (Diana) Chenkovich.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or Holy Family Catholic School.

A service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1115 13th St., Clarkston. A reception will follow at the Quality Inn.
